Things to Consider When Dating Single Dads

In this day and age, there are more and more single parents out there.  Single fathers are no exception and it is highly likely that you will meet someone who is.  If, after reading this, you have issues with any of the points, you may want to rethink dating single dads.

I have a girlfriend who has a list of qualities that she is looking for in a man, and one of those has to be that the man has no children.  I personally wonder how she can limit herself to some great men this way, but for her, she wants to be the center of his attention so it is probably best if she sticks to this parameter.

Here are some things to consider when dating single dads:

  • The relationship that brought forth children may have ended poorly, and he probably is not interested in looking for someone to marry quite yet.  Be patient and don’t talk about having children and marriage until you get to that point in your relationship.
  • The previous relationship may have ended due to the death of his wife or girlfriend.  If that is the case, you will have to be patient and understanding.  Just because he has decided to start dating again, does not mean that he won’t still have loyalty towards his former partner.  You may just have to take things slowly and go at his pace.
  • Expect that if he is a dedicated father, that you cannot be the only center of his attention.  If you will have problem dating someone who needs to provide attention to the children, then you should not date a single dad.
  • Expect that he may have other commitments on other nights of the week, if he is involved with his children.  This will require flexibility and patience on your part.
  • When the single dad does decide to introduce you to his children, you should not be involved in disciplining the children.  Leave that up to their parents.
