Perhaps you have considered dating online, but are concerned as this is something that you have never done before.  Let me remind you that with any kind of dating, whether it is online or not, there are always precautions that you should take.  Sure, there’s bound to be some sketchy people online, but sketchy people exist in the real world too.  I have chosen to discuss online dating safety tips as it is a newer method of meeting people, and lack of understanding about it  is probably what holds most people back from doing it. As I’ve said before, my girlfriend online dates and she uses a lot of the techniques that I’m going to share with you below.

Here are some online safety tips for single parents dating on the net:

• Do not provide your full name and home phone number, until at least after you have met this person many times and feel comfortable with him/her.  When you provide your full name or home phone number, the person you are dating can find out a lot about you such as where you live, where you work, and so on.  Until you know that the person you meet online is who they really say they are, then do not share this information no matter what.
• As a parent, do not discuss specifics about your children such as their names, where they were born, or where they go to school.  In fact, if someone seems to have too much interest in learning more about your children, see this as a huge red flag.
• Listen to your gut – if it is telling you that something is just not right, then it probably isn’t.
• Get a feel for the person through what and how they say things through your e-mail and later on through your phone communications with this new person.  Do they say things that make you feel uncomfortable or they seem to have a low tolerance for others or lose their temper easily?
• Use a free e-mail service such as hotmail or gmail to set up a free email account.  Ensure that when you set up your account that you not enter in your last name or other personal details (make them up if need be).  You need to ensure that when your emails get sent out that your last name is not in the From field on your e-mails.  Use this free e-mail account for all of your e-mail communications.
