Parents Dating

A lot of my other posts have focused on two parents dating one another, so I thought that I would change the pace a bit.This topic is written mainly for people who are not parents but find themselves dating single parent moms or dads, although many of the ideas can be applied to any kind of dating with children involved.

There are some big differences with dating a single parent compared to dating someone who has no children.  Despite this, it need not be a problem.  The most important thing is that you understand what sorts of things might come up, and then wisely use the information you learn today.  Here are some things to keep in mind:

• Remember that the children are the priority – no matter what!  In fact, if I was dating someone with children and he did not treat his children as priority, I would not be impressed with him.  Dates are going to come and go, and if that parent sees that, then you should be impressed with that.
• You will need to be flexible and understanding.  Children get sick, they get invited to birthday parties, and plans can change pretty quickly.  You will need to be patient and understand that your date plans may also change, depending on the children’s schedules.
• Do not expect to meet the children right away.  This is important to protect the children’s emotional health as it would not be wise to have the children meeting every date.  This therefore means that you should not be pushy to meet the children (in fact that should be seen as a red flag), nor should you hold it against the parent that you are dating.
• Realize that the person you are dating has a full plate, and may not always have the time and energy to go out.
• Do not be jealous of the ex-husband or ex-wife.  They share children, and this will never change.  They will need to talk to one another in order to do what is best for their children.  In fact, if they are actually nice to one another, this can show an awesome level of maturity about the person you are dating.
